Print Media
I am someone who has grownup with a paper at the end of the driveway every morning, and everyone had a turn at skimming through. I live in Northern Kentucky, so I often read The Cincinnati Enquirer everyday. Foe seventeen and a half years my mom worked at The Enquirer, I knew every reporters name, and spend most days over summer breaks at her office. I will always have a respect for print media, but I can still say that print media is a dying industry.
For almost every newspaper across the country, they are having financial problems. The Enquirer alone this past year laid off over 50% of their staff including the publisher. That show how drastic of a situation they are in, that they feel the publisher position is no longer valuable and needed. When I asked mom about the situation she stated "When I started in 1999 there were about 3,000 employees, and when I left in 2016 I believe the total to be about 150". Lots of newspapers are having to lay people off because of the of the budget cuts as print media is slowly becoming extinct. Even online publications are in financial situations with not having the amount of ad revenue they need. Most advertisers will not spend their money on putting ad's in newspapers, but in videos on YouTube, or television.
People I have talked to, the most common factor of why they don't like print media is because it's boring. We are in a generation that is controlled by our screens, and can access almost anything on it. My friend Taylor commented saying "There is no point for me to buy a subscription to a newspaper when can look up news for free on my phone, and half of the time the content i see online is more interesting. I don't lie to just sit there and read I need more than that". That is a common statement from people of this generation, they think just reading the newspaper is boring. Because of these statements online publications have added videos and more picture galleries, on top of the writing.
There are still some people of younger generations still read print media, but a majority of older individuals, because they have grown up with it. I will always be someone that loves a hard copy of the newspaper, but I understand that the industry is dying. I hope, like other trends, print media will come back and be the 'popular' form of news in later years.
